Optus Firmware S
Is that the type of thing they are ever likely to supply? Or do we need to wait for an updated optus firmware to be available to be able to flash to stock optus via ODIN? I am flashing a mates to KE7 tonight, like I did with mine, but this time I am applying cf-root first, doing a nandroid backup of completely stock optus KE2+root and doing a backup of all optus crap.apk's just incase I want to add some of them to clean KE7 in the future. If I had a warranty covered issue and did a nandroid restore back to optus KE2 firmware, would there be a way to remove root and cover my tracks so to speak? Or even better, a way to back up the optus firmware without root?

When Alex* found a security flaw in his Optus cable modem that allowed anyone with some basic technical knowledge to receive and make calls using his phone number and. Optus is introducing the capability to remotely upgrade the firmware in your DSL Direct modem. To take advantage of the capability you need to follow the instructions.
This is what I did to create backups and unroot it. Creating Optus Backup: 1. Go to Download Mode and Install CF-Root KE2 Root using Odin This will install Clockwork Recovery for you. Phone will reboot with root already (no need for SOC) 3. Run CWM Manager (from app tray) 4.
Choose Backup You will then have a nandroid backup located in the internal SD ( clockworkmod ). However, the backup will contain CWM and Root.
But that's okay. Read on to find more about restoring to a clean Optus ROM.
To Restore to Clean Optus ROM: 1. Go to Download Mode and Install a stock unbranded ROM (KE7 or KE2) using Odin 2. Go to Download Mode and Install CF-Root KE7 or KE2 3. Run CWM Manager and restore Optus backup (phone will reboot) 4. Install Root Explorer (download from Market or keep a copy handy in internal SD) 5. Remove CWM Manager from system app 6.
Go to Download Mode and install Odia KE2 Insecure 7. Run Superoneclick to ROOT (you can usually skip this step and go to step 8) 8.
Run Superoneclick to Unroot (if step 8 fails, do step 7 first) 9. Install stock KE2 Kernel from XDA You will have an unrooted Optus ROM but still contains your data. Do a Factory Reset from OS or from Recovery (Power + Vol UP + Home) You will have a clean Optus ROM but you also need to format your internal SD as well. Also, in addition to that, you may need to use that thing-a-ma-JIG from eBay to reset the download counter. I personally haven't tried resetting it as it hasnt arrived yet.
I was going to upload a relatively clean nandroid copy of Optus ROM but. While I was factory resetting after going back to KE7 stock, I accidentally formatted the internal SD. So, if anyone is willing to share their nandroid backup of Optus ROM, please let us know so we can possibly upload it somewhere. This is also useful to extract Optus My Account app because its 1.2 (compared to the one in Galaxy S which was 1.0). Please let me know if the above trick doesn't completely remove root. Optus Zoo, Optus Now, Optus navigation, MyAccount and some other junky stuff. I checked my battery stats and saw that Optus Now had used 30% of the battery, equal to Android OS.
Unacceptable, considering I didn't even open or use it. So i made a backup of My Account as that was the only useful Optus app and then upgraded to XWKE7 / stock kernel with root and completely debranded. After freezing some of the samsung apps as well i'm very happy. Hopefully I have no warranty issues before we get a clean Optus rom from someone. @4iedemon your process looks good, if i'd known i would have backed up the entire ROM instead of only MyAccount. Hopefully something pops up soon or a fellow Optus user can get a clean rom.
