I was recently given a Sony Ericsson S500I phone by a friend when she upgraded, which came only with the phone, a MicroSD memory card, and a charger. The charger is a somewhat unusual setup – although I don't really keep up with the latest in mobile phones or whatever, I've never seen such an arrangement before. Basically, a small cable (probably 15cm long, give or take) plugs into the phone. At the other end of the cable, there is a male USB plug such as you would plug into a standard USB port on a computer. The charger is a standard power pack slash AC-DC converter slash whatever you like to call it, which has about 10cm of cable extending from it and a female USB plug into which the other part of the cable is plugged.

SO, I assumed that, since according to all documentation available for the phone available from the phone does indeed support a USB connection to a computer enabling viewing/control over the phone and memory card contents, that the aforementioned cable accompanying the charger was in fact the data cable to be used to connect it to a computer. The user manaul states that once connected to a computer, the phone will give you the option of which mode you want to enter (one allowing standard Explorer-style control, the other. Something else). And this is where my problem lies. When I detach the short cable from the charger and use it to connect the phone to the computer, all that appears on the phone is 'Optimized Charging' (as when plugged into the AC charger) and it charges the battery. I have downloaded the software suite and drivers from the Sony Ericsson website – although in theory the phone should work fine without the drivers (as a standard mass storage device) – in the hope it may aid in a solution, but it didn't.

Windows Vista detects absolutely nothing – I have checked through Device Manager thoroughly, I have used third-party software to enumerate all USB devices, etc. Obviously charge is being delivered via the USB port, but it is not being detected as a piece of hardware. Now, I asked the original owner if how she had connected it to her computer, but unfortunately her response was 'Oh, can you do that?' So not much help there. I don't know if it's the 'data' cable itself – whether it infact is only intended to be used for charging the phone and not transferring data.

The phone attachment plug basically as only two pins which are near the top of the plug (i.e. When it's plugged into the phone, the end that is nearest the top of the phone). Any suggestions would be much appreciated! I just thought it would be worth asking here before rushing out to buy a new data cable for the phone and finding that still doesn't work. What is the pin configuration on the end of the plug that connects to the phone?

As I said mine only has two pins, seperated by about 5 to 7mm or so. As you may have noticed I dropped my S500i last night. I haven't used the usb cable for at least a year.

I'll have a dig around for it soon. Good phone btw. I'd buy another if they hadn't stayed the same price for over a year. Edit: I just remembered I left the usb cable at my parents' last year. However my wall charger sounds exactly as you described, just two small pins and then a gap but I'm sure the usb cable had more pins.

I'd send it to you if i still had it. Edit: Out of interest what do you need the cable for?

You can do most stuff via bluetooth if you have it. I think you can pick up a cable or bluetooth dongle for around $10 if you really need to transfer anything.
